Reinforcement

Reinforcement may not be a very common term in the general population when talking about behavior and learning. Even so, as the saying goes, “we know it when we see it”.

We like what we like when we like it.  We want what we want when we want it.  We all like and want different things.  We all learn ways to make things we don’t like stop.

Technically speaking, reinforcement refers to the idea that behavior increases when something is added or taken away IMMEDIATELY after the behavior occurs.  The adding and taking away of something refers to positive and negative reinforcement.  This can be a tricky concept but one that is imperative to understand how to best program for our participants.

As we think about what is reinforcing to people, we have to also consider different classes of reinforcement such as activity based, social, tangible and/or edible.

One way to ensure your ABA team is on the right track is if they are asking you what your loved one likes and dislikes.

At ABI, we recognize every individual is different and strive to understand their likes and dislikes – or what is and is not – reinforcing from the beginning of treatment.
